Call for City Boundary to be Extended

Speaking on the Annual Housing Report last night in Cork City Council, Sinn Féin’s Jonathan O’Brien said the council could cease to be a housing authority within years unless the city boundary is extended.

“Last year the city council constructed 218 houses and bought 47. In 2010 the local authority plans to provide 360 additional houses. This is in the context of a total housing list of 6,200 with another 1,500 waiting assessment.”

“The reality is, given the shortage of building land within the current city boundaries and the need for new housing developments to be of a mixed public-private nature, the council will never make serious inroads into the housing list unless it can access land in the county.”

“As things stand, Cork City Council is already purchasing houses in the county area. This brings its own problems however – for example the services to these houses are provided by the County Council, creating a financial and jurisdictional tangle.”

“Logic dictates that many areas like Grange, Douglas, and sections of Togher and Ballyvolane which form an integral part of Cork’s urban area should come under a single local authority with the rest of the city. The case for a city boundary extension is given added urgency by the reality that otherwise Cork City Council will in a few years be confined to managing its existing housing stock, unable to house any of the additional thousands on the housing list.”

Council needs Stronger Powers Against Problem Tenants – O’Brien

Speaking on the Annual Housing Report last night in Cork City Council, Sinn Féin Councillor Jonathan O’Brien called for changes to legislation governing anti-social behaviour orders to make it easier for the council to evict problem tenants.

“In the past twelve months, Cork City council called 239 tenants for interview about anti-social behaviour, and issued 23 verbal and written warnings. However there were only 4 notices to quit and not a single eviction. This was due to the absence of court orders.”

“The lives of many people in this city are being made hell by a small number of individuals who persistently engage in serious anti-social behaviour. However, the reality is that under the present system it is almost impossible to evict problem tenants. This is because the very neighbours whom they are terrorising can be required to testify in court.”

“There is currently a national review of the legislation under way, which is to be welcomed. If we are serious about tackling anti-social behaviour, it must be made easier for the council to secure an eviction order against persistently disruptive tenants. I believe the testimony of a senior housing officer, backed up by written and verbal evidence such as records of Garda call-outs, should be sufficient evidence to secure an eviction order.”

UCC to host annual commemoration

The U.C.C Martin Hurson cumann will hold their annual commemoration on Wednesday the 27th of January. The commemoration was started a number of years ago, to commemorate 13 volunteers buried on campus, killed during the tan war, where Cork Gaol once was.

It has gone from strength to strength in recent years, becoming a regular fixture in the local republican calendar.
Last year’s commemoration was particularly successful, with Senator Pearse Doherty giving the oration, and a large crowd attending.

This year the oration will be given by Dr Feilim Ó hAdhmaill, lecturer in Social Science in UCC, and former political prisoner. The event will be chaired by Bandon town councillor and U.C.C. student, Cllr. Rachel McCarthy, and the commemoration will be attended by the Youghal Volunteers RFB.
The commemoration will begin in the amphitheatre on front of the student centre in U.C.C. and will proceed past the Quad, and down to gaol cross, where a wreath will be laid at the old gaol wall, where Free State soldiers shot a man attempting to aid an escape.

The commemoration will then move on to the plot in front of the science building, where the oration will be given.
The commemoration will be followed by light refreshments.

Aid appeal for Haiti

Only a few days have passed, since the earthquake that rocked Haiti and it's people to it's very core. The death toll is unfathomable. A number will not justify the pain and suffering that the Haitian people face. It's now tipped to reach 200,000 people. To put that into context, that's nearly the entire population of Belfast - removed from the face of the earth in 60 seconds.

Haiti is now in dire need of assistance, and we ask that you put aside a few euro or pound for the Irish Red Cross or charity of your choice. You can donate by visiting the Irish Red Cross website at: http://www.redcross.ie/help/donate_now.php?appeal=98 - We ask all activists to make a special effort, to help Haiti and it's people get through these troubled times.

"Everyone, Republican or otherwise, has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small; no one is too old or too young to do something." - Bobby Sands
