Sinn Féin calls for doubling of Winter Fuel Allowance
Sinn Féin Calls for Doubling of Winter Fuel Allowance
Sinn Féin Cllr Jonathan O’Brien has called for the winter fuel allowance for the elderly to be doubled for the duration of the cold snap.
“The current severe weather conditions are putting an added burden on many elderly people who already struggle to meet the cost of heating their homes. Fuel poverty contributes to many deaths among the elderly each winter.”
“Pensioners will not have received the Christmas Bonus this year, putting their finances under additional pressure even before the extra costs of coal, gas and electricity are taken into account.”
“Doubling the winter fuel allowance for the month of January would cost the government little but would make a big difference to many elderly people struggling to heat their homes, and could even save lives.”
